About the grape variety

High-acid Romanian variety producing fairy light reds. Berry colour: black

Băbească Neagră, literally ‘grandmother’s black’, is a very old Romanian variety that most likely originated in the Nicoreşti vineyards in the county of Galaţi in Romanian Moldova, bordering Ukraine, where it was allegedly mentioned in documents as early as the fourteenth century and where it still shows significant intravarietal diversity (an indication of its age), including colour mutations with white (Băbească Albă) and green-grey or pink berries (Băbească Gri).

About La Spata Winery

"Our business is the fruit of a project which reflects the criteria of ethical investment. Apart from the splendid geographical location and the potential of the land, we have also felt that this investment could lead to some kind of social change.

The population here has experienced moments of great difficulty, and even now, through necessity, many have to rely on their own resources to get by. As a result of this difficulty, many Romanians have had to emigrate to the cities and abandon the country and the vineyards.

It would be a real shame to do nothing to reverse this tendency. By preventing this exodus and by managing to ensure work for the population, the important tradition of wine production in the region will not be lost." (Roberto & Roberto, founders of La Sapata)

Roberto di Filippo is a passionate winemaker. Natural viticulture is his life, and he has made his dream into reality. He spends his time with the horses who help him cultivate the vineyards, and his concerns in Italy and Romania. You are unlikely to find him in a jacket and tie, but  in boots and clothes more suitable for the vineyard.

Roberto Pieroni is a true wine-enthusiast.Although an agricultural entrepreneur in another field he is excited  by the prospect of producing quality wines in his second Homeland.

How to store

When preserved correctly, wine can last for decades, even centuries, growing in value and quality. But poor storage can spoil even the greatest wines in the world. These are a few aspects you should keep in mind: Store Wine at the Proper Temperature; Store wine bottles horizontally; Protect wine from light and vibration; Store wine at the proper humidity; Store wine in a wine fridge, not a regular fridge; Serve wine at the proper temperature; Store open bottles of wine properly

How to recycle

Up to 90% of new glass can be made from recycled glass. If you’re getting ready for a night out on the town, drink consciously and remember to keep your empties and then bring to the bottle bank. If you’re hoping to leave future generations with a healthy-ish and useful environment, then recycling wine bottles is the way forward and it doesn’t take much effort.
